Description

MoMA Exclusive: A timeless design that is both comfortable and stylish and a reimagining of the classic Acapulco chair, La Mamatoco is designed in and inspired by the Colombian tropics—a perfect combination of traditional techniques and international standards. La Mamatoco Rocker is distinguished by its round iron frame and a back and seat composed of rainbow-color bands of flexible PVC cords. The chair is handcrafted in Santa Marta, Colombia, where artisans are faithful to their weaving traditions which have been passed down for generations. The chair’s name derives from Mamatoco, a neighborhood in the city of Santa Marta.

While an old tradition, the artisanship keeps up with modern times and in recent years, these techniques have been adapted to include non-traditional materials, such as PVC cords and teak wood. The factory is committed to a zero-waste process in the production of their chairs, where all waste is recycled and transformed back into plastic for weaving. The factory where La Mamotoco is made employs vulnerable communities of the Colombian Caribbean and  the handcrafted process provides opportunities for people with little to no background in professional studies. The chair is entirely handmade in Santa Marta, from curving and welding to weaving and packaging.

The rocking feet of La Mamatoco are made from teak wood, and the chair can be used indoors or out (but stored under cover). La Mamatoco Rocker measures 28.5h x 29.5w x 34"d, with a seat height of 16.75", seat width of 16" and depth of 17.25". Holds up to 220 lbs in body weight.
